I was hoping to get a larger sheet finished by today, but it turned out to be more of a project than I thought. Guess it'll have to wait til next week! Tongue
Ooooh, I love surprises. Big Grin
Anyway, got that new one.

Without giving too much away, it should be something to look forward to. Wink
I was referred to this thread in one I myself had created, so... here I am.

I've got a question about how to use tools such as Console Tool, and was told you were the go-to guy to ask. Specifically, I'm trying to extract Fonts, Sprites, and Tiles (I think - though they could just be layered sprites) from Golden Sun: Dark Dawn for the NDS. I've fiddled with the programs, but so far all I've gotten it to be able to do is view hex data and extract compressed DAT and BIN files... so apparently, I'm doing something wrong. Got any tips or suggestions for me?

I don't want someone else to just do this for me - I'm trying to learn to do it myself, so advice is much preferred over delivering the content I'm trying to get.

Edit: Apparently, there's also a CHR file, which appears to be the text font, one of the things I'm looking for... but ways to convert this to a usable font file so far have eluded me...
Let's see what I can find through the game... you will need this Tongue
Most of the files seem to be in .bin, .sim and .dat file format (as you have said). Unfortunately that doesn't really help all that much, as they are pretty random file formats. Sometimes you are able to unpack the .bin files, but unfortunately for this game it doesn't seem to be the case. For future reference, here is the unpacking tool mentioned in the previous sentence.

The good news is that the textures seem to be perfectly rippable. Smile In the "flmodel" and "mapdata" folders, you should see many more folders. Within those many folders you should see many files, with extensions such as .nsbca, .nsbma, .mdlr, .nsbmdbin, .nsbtxbin. The files you want are .nsbtxbin. From here you will need to extract the files, go to the folder they were extracted to, and drag the file onto this. This should decompress them, leaving new files, which you can drag onto this. (The basic gist of this is that the textures are decompressed, so you are uncompressing the files and extracting the textures from said file)

From there you should be able to see the textures that were in that file. Unfortunately I have never played Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, so I have no idea what each of those textures correspond to.

A good person to contact about this is MagicMaker or Barubary, as both seem to have specific knowledge on this game. Smile

Unfortunately the same format as above, so I don't have much to say here... Contacting one of the people above will be your best bet. (I can say that the font should be in the "data>font" folder, though Tongue)

As far as other stuff from the game goes, with Tinke you can easily (although it may be a tedious process) rip the sound effects from this game, which would be in the "data>sound" file. If you don't wanna rip the sound effects (as there are quite a few), I suggest opening "test_data.sdat>STRM" as there are a bunch of cool-sounding stuff that can help the ripping process fly by. Tongue
Hopefully I remembered to type everything in there to get you on the right path, feel free to PM me if you have any questions regarding clarity issues of my typing, as I can tend to ramble on. Tongue
Oh, dear... in that case, it appears as though I may have hit a wall then. Models and sounds aren't what I need for the project I'm doing, and I've been trying to find the font for nearly half a year now... I can see what you're talking about in the Tinke program. Are they still updating that program, or... am I pretty much SoL here?

I'll see about contacting those two members to find out what they did, and to get some advice from them. Thanks for your assistance in the matter...
MagicMaker has already ripped quite a bit from the game and probably knows how to view the files, and Barubary is a contributor to the dsdecmp program that I linked to, which has a specific plugin for Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. With the knowledge that both have of the game, you should be able to get an ample amount of progress.

Also, what is in the texture files seem to be anything from map/dungeon textures to possibly menu icons, so it wouldn't hurt to skim through a couple just in case. I'll go through some of them and if I find anything worth mentioning I'll be sure to PM you.

As far as the font goes, the .chr file or the files in the "font" folder probably have the font in there, it's just a matter of viewing them.
Seems the characters were already uploaded, so I've just uploaded enemy 19! Smile
Well yeah, we both worked on the Characters sheet so we agreed to post it both.

@RoleOfGSHC: Have you had a go with ripping the fonts with an emulator? If Tinke is giving you problems then it might be easier to do with with the "layer-disabling-take-screenshots" method. Or are you looking to get stuff that can't be found in the game (e.g. unused sprites)?
