Your bigest issue are the colors. YI style is bright, even dark characters like Meta Knight should be bright. White highlights on everything, especially metallic surfaces like his mask. I don't now if you had used colors from the actual palette before, but I doubt it considering how dark they were. Use the real colors, look through the actual sprites, find colors that match what you want, and use them.
Reuse colors, you had a different yellow on his eyes and his sword despite the two being almost identical. Then you had a single pixel of the lightest purple. There is never a reason to add a color and use it in only one place.

Yes, I can, but they need to have fighting poses too.
Everyone is good if you know how to use them. Everyone just uses special attacks that's why they think he sucks.
That looks pretty nice, though I don't think the balloons should be that long. Other than that, it's nice. Never thought of editing Baby Mario to make Balloon Fighter.
