Thanks everyone. I guess the fact that it's not in motion and the fact that they won't be used on an actual background (they're not for a game anyway), I'll stick with outlines. Here they are with outlines:

Day 2: Sniper, Abaddon, Slardar, Crystal Maiden

16 pixels in height is probably the limitation I was restricting myself to.
