Need Running and Walking Help

I have this blank of a character . . . to simplify things I took off anything that wasn't needed.

I plan to make a simple walking and running cycle for it, but I'm not sure how to go about this . . .
Any tips?

i'd say to look at other walking sprites and try to base it of those. Sonic in Sonic advance 2 has a good walk cycle

Study animations of walk cycles frame by frame. Emulate. Emulate again. EMULATE AGAIN.
Do this until you get used to it.
I dunno, it's what I'm trying out now.
