Hey everybody.

I am currently working on a premier Smash Brothers sprite animation series that will be hosted on Machinima.com and written by Dexter Manning. I have found a lot of the sprite sheets you guys have made on here and I am really impressed. I would like to use some of them and I will most definitely give all of you the credit you deserve.

I have run into a couple of problems though and I thought you guys might be able to help me.

First, I am having a tough time finding all the final sprite sheets. Some of the characters I have found contain only a few poses. Is there a place I can go to download the final version of each character all organized in one place?

Second, the final sprite sheets I have been able to find sometimes differ in quality or style. For an example of style, notice how Lucas in the spritesheet below has a defined black outline but Ness does not. For an example of quality, notice how Ness and Lucas both have three to four palettes for shading where Captain Falcon only has one shade for shading.
http://spriters-resource.com/custom_edit...heet/17190
Has this already been fixed?

So I guess it's been a while since I've posted an update to the engine.
With the slow speed the project has been moving, I've had lots of time to rethink things about the engine. And being years later I have learned a lot more about programming.

The last feature I was actively working on was the character designer, but I have scratched that idea because I have found out a way to make the character designer 10x better and more efficient to use for this project. And by that I plan to move the character designer out of the game and will be designing a plugin for Helix which should be able to create customizable characters for this project. For those of you who do not know what Helix is, it's an animation program very similar to Flash Player that me and a few friends have started working on.
http://code.google.com/p/helixproject/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/helixproject/
The plugin I plan on creating will be very simple to use if you are familiar with animating in flash. Also note that Helix will be free and open source and so the plugin will also most likely be open source.

And I am also considering moving the game's code to HaXe (an open source, multi-platform language very similar to AS3; in fact so similar, porting it won't take much time at all) so that this game can not only be a flash game, but it could also be released as a computer game (running off of C++ or Java) so that we don't have to deal with the limitations of flash.

And I've never had a chance to discuss the issue of money involved with the project. But there is no doubt that flash games make revenue (even ones that have absolutely no ads in them can still earn a few thousand dollars). So I was wondering what plans you have for the profits the game could make. Originally, I planned on giving the majority of the profits (around %50) straight to the TSR website and the rest would be split among all the people who have contributed the to the project. But then it could turn into a big fight over who did the most work. And honestly to me, this project is meant to be a fan project and it doesn't seem right for it to used as a source of profit to anyone.

How to regulate voltage and amps for testing electrical equipment?
I would like to start testing and reconditioning some electrical equipment and I'm wondering what device or devices I can use to out put a specified voltage/amperage either AC or DC.

for instance I have an electric motor that needs 5v 20amps, and I require a device that would allow me to plug into a wall outlet and regulate the voltage and amps to the proper levels for testing this device.

hopefully that makes sense, thanks
We could make custom levels or just repeat the one in brawl and melee. Im currently working on a custom forest and bowsers castle.

We can make:

Im not a noob on forums and spriting by most means, but im rather confused on too how this project is being organised? Surely people are assigned different characters to complete? 'cos it just seems to be anyone can do any character so youll end up with about 100 sheets of the most popular/easy character and non of the hardest/ unpopular. So i was wondering who was still available and who is already done or a far on WIP so i could possibly contribute with a sheet of a character of my own work. So please, if you have dibs on a character, please try and post here so i, and possibly others, can know who is taken and who is not thanks

After debating about this project's problem and inactivity, we came up with measures that tries to counter-attack them.

TO DO:
*Mario
*Link
*Pikachu
*Ness
*Samus
*Sukapon
*Little Mac
*Gooey
*One SIMPLE level (Final Destination or Battlefield, for example)

OBSERVATIONS:
1-Do not post anything that doesn't directly contribute to the sprites. Discussing stuff like bosses, character status, game modes, etc. isn't our main goal here. Any posts of this nature will be deleted. If the same person breaks this rule more than once, he will be punished accordingly.
2-The priorities are listed above. Once it is completed, people will decide who should be listed. Do not whine about the list or suggest putting one more character on it.
2,1-This doesn't mean you need to completely stop other characters' sprites to work on the priority ones. Though, you can NOT post them. This is to limit people into making the listed stuff instead of doing other shit.
3-The sprite doesn't need to be 100% complete to be used in the engine; the graphics can be worked afterwards. All we realy need are the animations.
4-Don't try to be better than SSBB. There is no way we're going to be better than an official commercial game in the way we are. Think small, then gradually add stuff as they are completed.
5-This project depends on everyone to be completed. Do not let only one person to make the sprites. He eventually will get tired of making it, thus killing the project. Make sprites constantly, this way people will be more motivated to help.

I believe this covers most of our problems. Any mistake in this post can be edited anytime by me or the staff.

If you want a tl;dr, just read the bold lines.

Don't get me wrong, guys, I like the sprites and all the effort, but I really doubt this is ever going to be finished. First of all, you're trying to outdo SSBB, and I don't think it's a good idea at all. Of course, everyone wants to play a game better than Brawl, but it's just TOO FAR AWAY from us.

I doubt you people can reach the SSBB roster, make additional ones, make items, stages and all, principally in this pace. It's a utopia. Expect to carry this project for YEARS if you're really willing to finish it.

All I can suggest by now is to make the original 8 and two different levels. Completing a small goal like this might incentivate more people to help the project. This way, we can add other characters, one by one, as they're finished, and complete the project faster.

Latest version: 10-02-2010
Updates to the character designer (the main focus so far)
- fixed library sorting algorithm
- added in scroll bars
- added support for .gif animations

http://www.runouw.com/smash/game/TSRSmas...neAS3.html

There's the game so far, including the character designer.

How to use the character designer:
- Start by going to file - import, select and upload a few sprites for your character. (All need to be an individual file, sorry. I will work on getting animated gifs working soon)
- If it worked, Save it... Go to File -> Save
Watch this video on how to make animations: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkqnAUxScmg
Other controls:
- On the workspace, hold space and click to drag the workspace around... The plus shows where the bottom of characters feet should go.
- Use the mouse wheel to scroll though the library and list of attacks...
- At the top (the timeline) The circle button will create frames that carry on what is on the last key frame.
- ^ The plus button is a keyframe.
- To scale an image, use control + arrow keys.
- To rotate an image, use Z and X
- Holding shift will move by units of 10.
- Press , and . to change frames forward and back.
- Press enter to play the animation (It will play at 32 fps)
- You can toggle a layer's visibility by clicking on the name of it. (So that you don't accidentally click it when you need to edit something behind it)

It has an ENORMOUS amount of bugs at this moment. I would like you to report any that you find. Here is a list of the known bugs:
- When you import an image, you may have to try more than once.
- If the game freezes, just refresh. Save your character CONSTANTLY (and I recommend that you make backups...)
- Undo/Redo does not work exactly as it should
And incomplete stuff:
- You can't delete anything in the library
- Can't copy/paste frames
- New Character button doesn't do anything.. (just refresh the page for now, I am too afraid of people pressing this button when they are aiming for "import" or "save". Because I do not have an alert window with "are you sure" yet)
- You can't make attacks do any damage... yet.
- There is no sound effects support (It will glitch up if you upload a sound effect)
- Online battle mode doesn't work in this specific demo..
- You need a mouse wheel to scroll the Library and Animations windows (I haven't drawn a scroll-bar yet)

You can load this character as an example of how to make one yourself:
http://www.runouw.com/smash/game/CharacterGooey7
^ save the file as a .txt then load it with File - Load Character

I will be updating the engine periodically (every few months or so).
I'm pretty sure that your character code will still work through all of the updates. So you don't have to worry about making the character right now, it will work in the final version.

Please post suggestions of things I can change or fix. (If you run into any bugs, tell me so I can fix them [also a screen-shot will help me a lot more than words...])

Also here is the latest version of the card engine.

Yes, as the title suggests, this is a lecture. But no, I'm not a noob. I've been surveying this Smash Bros. Project for a very long time now, and I've finally decided to speak up. Just because I have less posts than you guys, doesn't mean I'm any less of a person, so please, refrain from any Anti-noob comments, alright? Don't just exit the page, either. Please, hear what I have to say.

Now you probably already guessed that this lecture is going to be in regards to progress. I'm not going to be all like "MAN YOU GUYS ARE SO SLOW HURRY UP NAO PLZ". I want to go through the way you guys... well... criticise other sprites.

I'm going along looking at all these fabulous standalone sprites... and all but... what? 3 of them have actually had any progress other than that? I've also found during my observation that it isn't necessarily because the spriters are lazy. It's because other people are too busy picking out pointless and insignificant little things in the sprite, which result in the spriter having to re-do it all over again. This very thing has been going on since the dawn of this Smash Bros. Project, and because of it, your progress has been very little.

You're going on about how we must finish Sukapon, so that Runouw can actually work on his engine and all, but even that hasn't gotten far at all! You may have like... close to everyone on the board working on that very character, but you've got all these other users criticizing like little Hitlers in the background! A sprite will never be 100% perfect, OK? Stop acting as though the ones here have to be. If those of you whom are actually pin-pointing these little things like "shading looking wrong" (when it actually looks perfectly fine) stopped for example, hell, maybe we would've gotten more than one or two characters with actual animations. Maybe then Runouw could actually work on the engine.

I see a perfectly wonderful sprite, and apparently the colour of the shoes is a bit off. To me, and to a number of reference pictures, it actually looks perfectly normal. Then the spriter re-posts the sprite with edits, and he gets even more criticism. And this procedure repeats for... what has it been? How many years again?

Is it ego? Do some of you feel the need to post pointless criticism because you want to sound better than the guy spriting, aye? I seriously hope not, because that's just sad.

I'm not the only one who thinks this, just keep that in mind. Hell, I reckon Runouw would be pretty damn sick of what you guys deem "progress" sometimes (EDIT: That wasn't supposed to sound rude. ). You guys seemed to think before that the reason the progress was so little was because of the sprite style. Honestly, it wasn't. To me, this style is harder, and I've got a lot of reasons as to why (which I won't go into detail with). The style had little to do with it; it was the attitude of some people here that held others back. I bet a million dollars that because of your harsh and blatantly pointless criticisms, many a spriter has decided against posting in this thread. Why would they want to be in a community that seems to so willingly reject wonderful works? And why should they?

Heed these words, coming from a "noob" or not. I's assume you've had lectures like these before, or at least people coming along and saying similar things in shorter instances. Don't ignore it, otherwise we won't be seeing the completion of this project for another ten years. If of course it isn't dumped, because of the very reason that some people just aren't allowing the project to move on.

So to a number of you, I say: Let it go and lighten up. Yes, I say lighten up because I've noticed a few of you are just blatantly rude at times.

And one more thing: That guy with the avatar of the naked Asian chick... I honestly can't stand looking at that. Not because I'm "Gay" or anything. Just because it gives me the mindset that you're a... I hate to say this.... but a massive Geek. (EDIT: Seriously, this was intended to in no way be offensive. I sound like a massive jerk here, I'm aware of that. I just personally dislike things like that on community forums, if you know what I mean. Sorry to the dude with this pic as an avatar.)

Gosh, I sound like a mean old man, don't I? Well, I've just vented up all my anger on those select few Jr. Hitlers until now (EDIT: I'm not saying you're all Jr. Hitlers. I'm just stereotyping some people here through posts I've encountered before). It feels good to voice it.

So what do you guys have to say, I wonder? Hopefully I'll get no hate messages, but I suppose it's only to be expected.

If you're reading this and all you did was skim through this whole topic to the end, please go back and actually read it. I'm sure five minutes won't be too much of a hassle.

If we are working on the engine, i think special effects would be easy to work on, and would make the engine a LOT better.
