Half Life 2 and Portal both run on Source, so they both use the same mdl format. TF2 and Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 also use the same mdl format as Half Life 2. They don't however use the same skeletons, so you'd have to do some rigging and coding to get a portal model to work in Half Life 2 as a playermodel.
Games like Half Life 1 and Counter Strike 1.6 run on Goldsrc so they use a slightly different mdl format than Half Life 2. It's my understanding that crowbar can compile and decompile all Source mdl's but not all Goldsrc mdl's.
