all the files in the ROM's "char"-folder seem to be in pairs, a .hit file and a .tex file.
At the end of the tex I could find the palette, but that's about it. The files may be compressed, and Tinke was unable unpack them.
At least font16x16.dat is uncompressed though, which leads me to believe that all .dat files are pure uncompressed graphics. Sadly there aren't many of them.
