Well if we want to continue the kid's imagination metaphor, tabuu is the the taboo of fantasy play, starting to believe its real/ losing the fantasy. Basically a little psychotic thought that blurred the lines between fantasy and the reality. the kid was either losing his grasp on reality, or losing the magic of the imagination.
This also explains sonic's lateness in the fight, because clearly the parent snapped the kid out of it by whiping a sonic figure at him.
