Unlocking characters should be an excuse to try other modes of play, and challenge yourself in ways you normally wouldn't. (I may have liked SSE, but I didn't like unlocking everyone through it...)
In other words, the process used to unlock a character should reveal a new way to play the game... further expanding on just what the game can really be and encouraging players to experiment just to find them.
