Agreed. I try to find graphics files/tiles first,, but will do hard ripping if I need to. 
I've tried tile ripping in the past with mixed results; for most modern games, it is very difficult to find the correct palette and then assemble the tile pieces.
But hey, whatever way floats your boat.
