Universal Rules + (Updated June 11, 2014) - Dazz - 05-13-2008 Universal Rules
These rules are general rules that should be upheld in all areas of the forum, rather than just specific areas. These are the most important to know.
By posting in or opening a thread on these forums, you acknowledge these rules and guidelines and agree to follow them.
1. Don't be dumb. No pointless or stupid comments. Do your best to type in complete sentences and with correct spelling and grammar, don't spam or advertise, etc. Yes, this includes another person's topic and/or rep points.
2. Be friendly. Don't just randomly flame other members and be mean for no real reason. Randomly accusing members of sprite theft and the like without evidence or a VERY good reason to do so is against the rules.
3. Respect the staff team. This doesn't mean that you can't disagree with us or criticize us for our work, but don't think that just because we aren't regular members we don't have bad days occasionally, just like everyone else.
4. Stay safe for work. Don't post any porn or illegal material. This includes linking to ROMs and the sites that host them. Discussion about ROMs and emulators is fine in reference to how to use them to rip the resources we archive on these sites but any links to or instructions for obtaining ROMs is strictly forbidden.
5. No excessive use of memes or fads. If it's on the internet, we've probably already heard or seen it. Please don't think you're original for posting "shoop da whoop" or talking about "long cat" - you can use 4chan for that.
6. Don't just request for things. If there is anything that Tony the Tiger ever taught me, it's that you have to earn your stripes. Nobody will respect you if you join the community just to request something and then disappear forever. Because of this, you're required to make 20 posts before you're allowed to request anything. This gives you time to integrate yourself into the community and learn to post here. You can try to request in the Requests forum, but there's no guarantee that the request will be fulfilled to the quality that you want or even at all. Make sure to read the rules of requesting VERY CAREFULLY if you wish to request.
7. No e-kleptomania, please. Trying to submit stolen work to tSR is a pretty big deal (and will have some pretty big consequences when we find out), but posting media that isn't yours in the Sprite Projects, Sprite Discussion, and/or Creative boards - and all Sub-boards included - pretty much counts as stealing. If someone wants their work posted here, they should do so themselves. 8. Don't bump old threads or double post. Don't necropost. In other words, don't bump an old thread that is dead, which generally means anything not on the first page of topics. Of course, if it's something like your own topic and you're showing some changes to your old work or something, then go ahead. On that note, it's fine to double post if you're bumping your own thread because you've made a noteworthy change to your work or have something else valuable to add; just don't bump your thread if it's simply to say "bumping because it's not the first topic in the list" or something stupid like that. Also, please don't bump your topic in quick succession - if the last couple of posts are all yours, please wait rather than bumping for tiny changes. If you do want to bump a dying topic, please do, but make sure it's at least reaching the end of the page of topics first.
9. Let's have page loading efficiency! Being a board heavily related to digital art, there are going to be a whole lot of images posted. Some of these images are going to be very large. However, if the images are too large horizontally, the forum boundaries will have to stretch to accommodate - which can cause issues on a few computers and slow net connections. If an image is really that large, link to it instead (all image hosting services offer direct links as well as the image insertion code). Same with threads containing a lot of videos, such as this one and this one; put them in spoiler tags so it doesn't slow down the browsing. We're not heartless enough to warn you for things like that, but we'll convert very large images and videos to links/spoiler tags if necessary.
10. Reporting System The reporting system is there to report posts that are offensive, out of order, or just plain wrong. Don't report something like "he locked my topic" when you know good and well there was a good reason for a lock. The mods have to take time to check the reports and want to spend that time making the forum a better place rather than seeing stupid reports. So yeah, don't abuse the reporting system, especially over and over again. Thanks. 11. Bandodging Were you banned? Good. Chances are you probably deserved it. If you attempt to make an alternate account in order to get around your ban (also called bandodging) you will be re-banned (on both accounts) and additional time will be added to your original ban. If you were permanently banned, well, you're still permanently banned. If you continue to bandodge, you WILL be IP banned. Because of this, coming here through a proxy isn't the best idea. Though proxy use isn't disallowed, we do have a couple of banned members who have tried to get past an IP ban using proxies, so the proxy that you're using will probably end up becoming banned. You'll either have to find a new proxy or just come here through your normal IP address.
Secondary Rules
To keep things tidy and in one place, other sections' rules will also be posted here. Dividing the rules across several sections proved difficult to the newcomers, so while this might make things a little long, all the rules can be checked in one place. NOTE: The rules listed below may be slightly outdated because they're crossposted from the actual rule thread in the corresponding section. We do our best to keep the rules updated in all places, but sometimes inaccuracies may happen. It is advisable to read the rules in the actual forum thread. If accuracies do exist, the valid version is the one posted in the actual forum thread. [spoiler=Spriting & Pixelart Rules] The Universal Rules apply.
By posting in or opening a thread on these forums, you acknowledge these rules and guidelines and agree with what they state. Spriting & Pixelart Rules 1. Board purpose This forum is mainly to help people to improve and develop as spriters / pixel artists. Furthermore, it serves as a form of quality control for those who intend to submit custom sprites to the tSR website. Here, you can show your pixel works in order to get comments and criticism. Feel free to help others with advice and your opinion. 2. Be friendly and polite While you're encouraged to share your opinion, don't get upset when someone decides not to follow your criticism. Likewise, you shouldn't get upset when you disagree with the comments and criticism you receive. Keep agressions at a minimum. The general guideline applies: If you feel offended, make use of the report system to contact staff instead of picking a fight. Moreover, if you have nothing of value to add, rather leave a topic alone instead of making insulting remarks. 3. Offer your advice and criticism in a proper way Aside from being polite, it's also important to be understandable. Keep in mind not everyone is familiar with all the pixel art specific terms. While we do have a Spriting Dictionary topic, it's never wrong to explain your points in more detail, especially when helping newcomers and beginners. Try to keep your advice simple and clear. 4. About custom sprites & edits The boards are mainly meant for custom sprites. You also are allowed to post sprite edits and recolours. However, don't be surprised when you don't receive the comments you expect. Most people prefer to offer their help on custom work so chances are the only answer you will get is that (and in the best case, why) you should make custom sprites instead. Again, stay friendly and calm when explaining why splices, recolours and edits are discouraged. If someone insists on making them, let them. Sprite showcase threads are also allowed, however if you appear to block all criticism, you may end up not getting any replies. Note that criticism doesn't necessarily need to be applied to the current piece, but can also be applied to future work only. 5. Images & attachments In order to show your sprites, upload the image file to an image hoster (like Imgur, Minus, Dropbox or one of the countless others). You can also use the attachment system on the new topics / post page. You can embed your image by using IMG tags (example below). For really large images (like ones that stretch the page), it's advisable to put them in SPOILER tags. [spoiler=Example] Code: [img]IMAGE-URI[/img]6. Sprite Discussion Threads To prevent drowning out other people's threads and to reduce the general topic chaos, users are encouraged to use general sprite threads for their creations instead of creating a new thread for every single sprite they make. Note that this doesn't mean you should use someone elses sprite thread to discuss your sprites, which on the contrary is prohibited unless it is an open project or event. If your last sprite thread is rather old, feel free to make a new one instead of bumping it if you prefer that. However if it is quite fresh, please re-use it instead of opening another one! [/spoiler] [spoiler=Game Dev Section Rules] The Universal Rules apply.
By posting in or opening a thread on these forums, you acknowledge these rules and guidelines and agree with what they state. Game Dev Section Rules READ IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST TIME POSTING IN THIS SECTION! ANY THREAD THAT DOESN'T FOLLOW THE RULES WILL BE CLOSED AND THE ORIGINAL POSTER WILL BE WARNED. 1. Post enough content. We won't accept a thread that barely describes your game, and especially not if there's no game or content at all. If you're making a game, be sure to include actual evidence of the game being worked on. In other words, make the game available for others to play, show screenshots, talk about the gameplay/programming, etc. If you're working on a game idea, tell us how the game will play, show some concept art of characters and/or places. If you're making a program or application, tell us what it does, the requirements to run it, etc. Include -something- in your thread to let us know what it is that you’re posting. Don't forget to say what programming language/game-making program you're using for the project.
2. Everything posted here is prone to criticism. People will give C+C on your work, so don't go apeshit if you don't get the sugarcoating you wanted. Consider this a way to promote your game; we’re giving you advice on how to improve here and make your game the best it can be.
3. Requests are strictly prohibited. We don’t have a requests section just because. If you plan on making a thread in which you're the “idea guy” and just want us to “make sprites for your game”, forget it. Either post it in the requests section like everyone else, or don’t post at all.
4.How to upload files. Use dedicated external file hosting sites, such as Mediafire, Filebeam, Dropbox or another site of your preference. WHAT IS ALLOWED IN THE GAME DEV SECTION?
Any mod has the rights to update these rules when they feel it necessary. [/spoiler] [spoiler=Creativity Board Rules] Creativity Board Rules Check the actual forum here. 1.Tag what kind of topic you're posting. Please label your topic with what it is. If it's art, writing, or something else. Put the label in the title ([ART], [MUSIC], [WRITING], for example) or in the "Description" field. Pretty simple, easy, stick it in, done. Simple. Fast. Pucka. 2. Don't just say it's bad. If you plan on telling someone that their work isn't very good, tell them why. And remember to be a bit gentle about it. Be as brutally honest as you can by all means, but don't just say "that's terrible" and don't get personal with it. Tell them how to improve if you can, and if you can't at least say that you don't know how they can correct it.
3. Don't Get Angry or Upset. If you can't take the criticism, then you shouldn't be showing your work. It's as simple as that. Of course if someone has just said your work isn't that good you should be upset, maybe even angry, but just accept it, and if they were just flaming you with no real criticism, then report it to us and we'll take care of it. 4. Basis of Artistic Nudity. Artistic nudity is allowed, but please mention if there is nudity involved in the art. If you do not label it as having adult themes, there will be SERIOUS consequences. And there is a difference between artistic nudity, and just nudity. Don't post hentai and porn. [/spoiler] [spoiler=Request Rules] The Universal Rules apply.
By posting in or opening a thread on these forums, you acknowledge these rules and guidelines and agree with what they state. Request Rules 1. Request Requirements Members need a minimum of 20 posts and must have been registered for one month or longer to be allowed to make requests. People joining purely to make a request are not appreciated. Note that spamming to get those 20 posts will get you in trouble. Be sure to check our Resource websites (tSR, tMR, tSoR, tTR), use the Forum Search and Google (or whatever you prefer) before making a request. 2. Be clear and understandable When posting a request, make clear what you want. Be precise and to the point, give all necessary information (game, system, style, character...). If people have to research what exactly you want, they may be less inclined to help. 3. No one is required to fulfill your request Fulfilling someones request is doing them a favour. You cannot expect anyone to do what you want and you cannot demand anything. Note that smaller requests are more likely to be fulfilled than large and complicated ones. Furthermore, you're free to offer incentives like money to raise interest. If no one fulfills your request, chances are no one wants to or no one knows how to do it. We're people, not slave machines. Wait at least one or two weeks before bumping a topic and accept it when a request won't be fulfilled. Consider learning how to do it yourself. In general, stay friendly and respectful. No one likes to do a favour for someone they don't like. 4. Fulfilled requests Fulfilled request threads will be locked and moved to Completed Requests. If you think you have something valuable to add, contact the requester or a mod. [/spoiler] [spoiler=The Lounge Rules] The Lounge Rules Check the actual forum here. Welcome to the TSR Lounge. It's a place to relax and talk about things that really don't fit in GD. You know - GD has that stuffy sorta air about it that you talk about something and you gotta STAY on that topic, and you can't post about the quarter you found while doin the laundry. WELL HERE YOU CAN. This is pretty much off-topic. Now, I've got one simple rule so far. Most other rules within the forum apply. (Check Universal Rules for additional info.) Special Lounge Rule You CAN make spam topics, but the spam stays IN THAT TOPIC [A mod can even label these [SPAM] in the topic title if they want]. If there's a "serious" topic ongoing in this lounge, you CANNOT derail the topic, start posting trash and kill the nature of the thread. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE TOPIC WILL BE CLOSED AND THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR WRECKING DISCUSSIONS WILL BE ISSUED A 10% WARNING. [/spoiler] [spoiler=Real Life Rules] Real Life Rules Check the actual forum here. 1.Give a quick check to see if a thread exists already. The Happy/Not Happy Threads cover most bases, but threads about school life and such are two-a-penny. Contribute to existing threads if the topic you want to discuss is related. 2.This board is semi-serious. Or at least more serious than other sections on this forum. As such, a reasonable amount of thought is required to your posting. That's not to say that light-heartedness is banned, just have a little content to back up your image posts, or reasoning behind why you agree/disagree with someone. There's an exception to this with the Photos of Yourself thread, which generally thrives on being a bit silly. 3.There's a difference between arguments and flame-wars. Some topics discussed are going to be personal matters to some members, so heated discussion is just fine. Just bear in mind that being refuted on a point isn't the same thing as a personal attack, and personal attacks are DEFINITELY not the same thing as refuting a point. Let's all act like sensible adults here.
If you break the rules, we will make a judgement on what you will receive as a punishment which will be decided by either the administration team or the moderation team. Spamming, Flaming, and Stealing have set warning levels and effects on posting rights, but there are exceptions. Remember: The admins and staff can pretty much do what they want, and reserve the right to change these rules at any time. RE: Universal Rules (31/8/08) - GrooveMan.exe - 08-31-2008 Made some minor updates. You gotta read this kind of thing regularly, kids. RE: Universal Rules (2/9/08) - Maxpphire - 09-02-2008 Made another update which apparently needs to be brought to life. RE: Universal Rules (8/9/08) - GrooveMan.exe - 09-08-2008 Rule Thread Remix #3. The list is starting to get longer, but we do it because we love you guys.
RE: Universal Rules (13/10/08) - Maxpphire - 10-13-2008 Made a minor update since we've been having issues on determining if a certain banned member who used a proxy had alts or if they were normal members. RE: Universal Rules (13/10/08) - Ninspriterx - 01-18-2009 Took out 10.1 and added some of it to 12. RE: Universal Rules (1/2/09) - Maxpphire - 02-01-2009 Added rule 13 and put rules 12 and 13 where they are supposed to be. RE: Universal Rules (1/2/09) - Adam - 02-11-2009 Added rule 14 about abusing the Reporting System. Don't do it, guys. I'm basically counting the warn percentage for that as I would spamming, so yeah. RE: Universal Rules (10/23/10) - Alpha Six - 10-23-2010 Hi guys, check out New Rule #2.2. RE: Universal Rules (10/23/10) - Maxpphire - 10-24-2010 Tyvon breaks they cycle by putting the month first!!!!!!!!! Oh dayum looks like I'm breaking the new rule already!!!!! RE: Universal Rules (11/21/10) - Gors - 11-21-2010 Added a rule concerning the User Comments feature (#2.3) RE: Universal Rules (11/21/10) - Gors - 02-11-2011 Added a rule about avatars (#4.1) RE: Universal Rules (Updated 09/07/11) - Vipershark - 09-07-2011 Update: 9-7-11 I went through and basically did a complete overhaul on the rules. --Fixed various spelling and grammatical errors as well as added new formatting. --Various clarifications for vague-sounding rules. --Addendums to various rules. --Removed Rule 2.3 (rules about User Comments) because that board feature was removed but the rules were never updated to reflect it --I felt that the old Rule 6.1 (no e-kleptomania) was a major enough deal to be its own rule; besides, it didn't really fit onto requesting, so I made it into its own rule. Rule 6.1 is now Rule 7. --Rule 8 (Single word, short sentence, etc rule) fits better as a sub-rule to rule 1 since rule 1 covers pointless/stupid comments. Rule 8 is now Rule 1.2. --Same deal with Rule 9 (Don't de-rail other people's topics). It fit better within the realm of generally not being dumb, so Rule 9 is now Rule 1.3 --Rule 12 (Signatures) made more sense as a sub-rule to Rule 10 (Page efficiency), so I fixed that. Does anyone else think that it would make sense to place Rule 8 (necro and double posting) as a sub-rule to rule 1? It fits with the whole "Don't be dumb" vibe. RE: Universal Rules (Updated 09/07/11) - Ultimecia - 09-07-2011 I think it's a good idea to let rule 8 as it is because it deserves to be treated a such. More to have a little more sense of 'weight' (not as if the sub-rules or addendum aren't important) On the signature rule, might I suggest they can't be larger than 600 pixels wide? This usually is enough to don't break any browsers. RE: Universal Rules (Updated 09/07/11) - Vipershark - 09-07-2011 Sure, but do you mind if i increase that to 640px? For example, Gorsal's signature is 640px wide but doesn't break the table. |
